Domaine des Crêts 2015 Mâcon-Chardonnay Climat "L`Echenault de Serre"

“L’Echenault de Serre” is the younger of the two parcels that Lequin has in Ozenay. Very loosely translated, the climat name means “where the rainwater runs down to the serfs,” which describes the situation of this site, below “En Bout,” where there is a bit more clay in the soil. Although François aims to make the wines in Ozenay the same way that he makes his 1er and Grand Cru wines in the Côte d’Or, he knows there are differences: “getting ripeness is not difficult, keeping acidity is not easy,” he says of Mâcon. “We decide to harvest by taste verified by acidity and pH and not by sugar level.” This is 100% barrel fermented in Chassin and Rousseau barrels, of which only two barrels were new, making up about 12% of the blend. Because of the higher clay content here, the wine shows more fleshiness and roundness than the climat “En Bout,” but it is by no means a rich-styled Mâcon. L’Echenault was the top-rated Mâcon in La Revue du vin de France in its inaugural year, and in the September, 2015 issue of Bourgogne Aujourd'hui, the editors wrote: “the wines from Domaine des Crêts, will, in the coming vintages, be the reference of north Mâconnais wines."
