Heinrich Spindler

Pfalz | Forst

In 1620, Sontag Spindler left Burgundy for the Pfalz to purchase vineyards, including parcels in some of the world’s most exalted vineyards — namely Kirchenstück. His descendant, Heinrich Spindler, went on to found the Spnidler estate. Markus Spindler, great-grandson of Heinrich Spindler, now leads the 20 ha, organically farmed estate. Riesling is the star here, on limestone, colored sandstone, and basalt soils and in a range of Pfalz microclimates. From his everyday bottlings to the Grosse Lagen, the wines are tactile, focused, detailed, and decidedly dry. They are about nuance and purity over power, grace and precision over opulence.

Heinrich Spindler 2015 Pechstein Riesling Grosse Lage

Pechstein means “pitch stone”—like tar—and it refers to the igneous rock basalt that comprises this site. This is decidedly “red” in aromatics and much more compact and dense than the Ungeheuer, despite the fact that Pechstein is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel. It has the cranberry’s tart outer rim but has the interior sweetness of cassis and berry compote.
