Domaine René Lequin-Colin

Burgundy | Côte de Beaune | Santenay

The wines of this domaine emphasize purity and transparency. From 1er and grand cru holdings in Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet, vigneron François Lequin lets each site speak in the clearest possible voice through organic farming and “a small hand” in the cellar. There is a bright freshness to the wines, from the Retour aux Racines that is a complete departure from basic Bourgogne Blanc to the regal, but never overbearing Bâtard-Montrachet. The pinot noirs are charming and fruit-driven, marked by drinkability and finesse. Altogether, the Lequin-Colin range represents a rare opportunity to tap into tremendous quality and value in Burgundy.

Domaine René Lequin-Colin 2016 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Only two and half barrels were made in the 2014 vintage, with about 35% new oak in the blend. François has two semi-contiguous parcels here, totaling 0.13 ha, both in the northwest corner of the Cru. One parcel has rows that run north to south along the border of Le Montrachet to the west, and Les Criots to the south, as the vineyard slopes toward Criots in this part of Bâtard. The other parcel is on edge of this slope with rows running east to west with the western-most vines adjoining the boarder to Le Montrachet. This wine is what you’d want in Grand Cru chardonnay: it’s linear but full, juicy yet long, flavorful and compelling.
