Domaine Alice Hartmann 2017 Grevenmacher Fels Riesling

Located in the southernmost (upper) region of the Mosel River Valley, the soil consists of pure limestone instead of the Devonian slate found along the Mosel in Germany. Grevenmacher Fels is situated just 50 meters west of the river's edge, receiving ample sunlight and reflection with its southeast orientation. On the western edge of the vineyard is a limestone escarpment, and to the south lies a thick forest, both of which help shield the vines from extreme weather conditions. Hartmann's holdings are terraced and average vine age is 50 years. This riesling was vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, where it remained for seven months prior to bottling. Of the two rieslings, the Fels is more mineral-focused. Flavor profiles are similar to that of a Saar riesling. However, unlike the Saar, these rieslings show less apple, are bottled with a bit of residual sugar, and contain a broader mid palate.
