Domaine René Lequin-Colin 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot (Rouge)

François believes that the character of his is Morgeot rouge is comparable to the wines of Vosne-Romanée, being “fresh, juicy, long and structured.” His parcels here are in the “Tête du Clos” and “Les Grands Clos” in the center of the 19 climats who can label the wines as 1er Cru Morgeot. His parcel of “Les Grands Clos” is directly opposite the Abbey ruins, across the street. Lequin has a total of 0.32 ha of pinot noir planted in these two parcels of Morgeot. This is an impressive wine—especially for a commune that is better known today for chardonnay rather than pinot noir. Historically, the site was more famous for red wine. Lequin’s offering is reminiscent of a Côte de Nuits pinot noir: it has extract and depth while still offering a lithe profile buoyed by acidity and length. It should not be missed.
