Knebel 2015 Röttgen Riesling

Röttgen is Devonian slate with loess and quartzite and it’s one of the steepest sites along the river, just downstream from the village. Here, to mitigate against climate change, Matthias has moved from pole trellising to horizontal wire trellises up the hill which allows for wind movement and for the lower rows to shade the grapes on the upper rows to prevent sun burnt grapes. Like all of Knebel’s small parcels, the juice goes into the vessels that are available. Here it was 1000L in steel and another 750L in steel. The 750L fermented dry and the 1000L stopped naturally in the mid-20s grams/L. There was nothing to do but blend the two together and the resulting wine is a masterpiece of concentrated elegance. It’s seamless and delicate and deep and focused and juicy and salty-long. It’s one of Matthias’ best wines from the 2015 vintage.
