Weingut Fromm 2017 Pinot Noir Selvenen

Widely regarded among the top vineyard sites in Malans, Selvenen is a rather large climat and has several owners. The Fromms own and organically farm 1.3 hectares of vines in Selvenen, making theirs one of the largest single holdings in the vineyard. While there is some chardonnay planted here the major focus is on pinot noir, of which the Fromms farm both Swiss clones that are nearly 50 years old and 20+ year old Dijon clones in roughly equal proportions. The soils in Selvenen are of an alluvial fan comprised of schist, limestone and gravel lending a distinctively mineralic imposition to the structured alpine pinot noir that comes from this site. The first Selvenen bottling at Fromm was from the 2010 vintage and it has been among their most highly regarded cuvées ever since. As with all pinot noir at Fromm the Selvenen is spontaneously fermented in large, open oak, with 2 weeks of maceration. Elevage continues in neutral barrique, with typically 20% new oak, for more than a year, without battonage, prior to bottling with minimal sulfites.
