Domaine des Crêts

Burgundy | Mâcon | Ozenay

Domaine des Crêts is a partnership between François Lequin, of Santenay’s Domaine Lequin-Colin, and Matthieu Ponson of Cornas. Together, they took over the former Domaine Pascal & Sylvie Pauget in 2014 to pursue a shared vision of the northern Mâconnais and cultivating wines of Côte d’Or standards there. Today Domaine des Crêts encompasses 4 hilly hectares, with farming in conversion to organics. The emphasis on restricted yields, expressions of clay-limestone soils, native yeast fermentations, and deliberate must oxidation to ward off premox results in great Mâcon chardonnay that is elegant, with no shortage of tension, vivacity, or length.

Domaine des Crêts 2014 Mâcon-Villages

The basic wine here is made the same way that Lequin-Colin’s wines are made from the “Retour aux Racines” range and up, which is to say, it is all fermented in oak, but only 10-15% new. The grapes come from both climat parcels of “L’Echenault de Serre” and “En Bout.” After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine is raised in 20 hectoliter neutral oak casks before bottling, but the goal is to move all fermentation here to 450L oak barrels. In total, Domaine de Crêts has 3 ha of chardonnay, and this is not the typical Mâcon-Villages. It isn’t rich or buttery or oaky or opulent. Instead, its focus is limestone and citrus and length and purity.
