Karl Haidle

Württemberg | Stetten

“There’s a change coming. Württemberg is getting more and more interesting. We’re right in the middle of it,” says Moritz Haidle. It only takes a few minutes in his company to feel his sparking energy and ideas. But to stand in his vineyards, walk the old-cask-lined cellar built into the very hill those vineyards climb, and above all taste through his extraordinary, ever more focused, dynamic, and expressive wines is all the convincing you’ll need.

Karl Haidle 2016 Stetten Riesling Kabinett "Pfeffer"

“Pfeffer” means pepper though this wine isn’t named for the spice, but rather for David Pfeffer, a local musician and comedian from the late 18th Century. Coming from the Häder and Pülvermacher vineyards, it was fermented in stainless steel, aged in neutral stückfass, and it stopped with 12 grams/L residual sugar. It’s a lithe and classically styled Riesling showing minerality, red peach and apricot on a lacy structure. There is some phenolic grip to the wine which a higher residual sugar could have smoothed out, but the wine is delicious on its terms and harkens back to old-school kabinett from the days of the 1960s.
