Domaine Philippe Viet

Beaujolais | Morgon

While Philippe Viet did not grow up in a world of winemaking or viticulture his craft is as keen as his mentors. After prying himself out of the city and turning away from his tech job trajectory he found his love of wine and the terroirs of Beaujolais landing him with a job learning under Eric Janin (Domaine Paul Janin et fils, Moulin-à-vent). Philippe’s greatest takeaway from his tenure under Janin was that “humility must be the cornerstone of my craft. Understanding and respecting your land is key to the crafting of great wines.”

Domaine Philippe Viet 2020 Beaujolais-Villages

This Beaujolais-Villages is not your standard, broad-appeal Beaujolais expression, this entry level bottling from Philippe Viet is as much a distinctive expression of singular terroir as the rest of his portfolio. Vines for the Beaujolais-Villages average 50 years in age, and are grown organically at 500m elevation on the historical lieu-dit Py de Bulliat, in Cru Régnié. Py de Bulliat’s soil is made of granitic sands and gravel with variable proportions of clay. Analog treatment is the name of the game in the cellar, with whole bunch fermentation and no added sulfurs, 13 day maceration with only one gentle pressing afterwards. Elevage is continued for 8-10 months in egg shaped tank before bottling. The wine displays an explosive nose that unveils aromas of purple flowers with enticing acidity supported by a pronounced tannic structure.
