Antico Broilo

Friuli Colli Orientali DOC

Giovanni and Massimo Duri are the 4th & 5th generation to cultivate Antico Broilo’s 6ha in the commune of Prepotto. “We made a conscious choice to cultivate only varieties that were already present on the estate, to keep our history in the vineyard.” This means old vines and massal selections of four native varieties that scarcely survived the 20th century: friulano, ribolla gialla, refosco dal peduncolo rosso, and schioppettino. Organic farming, tightly controlled yields, hand harvests, and minimal cellar intervention—native yeasts, racking by gravity flow, little added SO2, brief skin maceration for the whites, long aging in wood for reds.

Antico Broilo 2016 Schioppettino di Prepotto DOC

This grape variety traces its history in Friuli back to the 13th century, when schioppettino represented about 75% of all plantings, since that time the variety nearly vanished until brought back by 1970s advocates in Prepotto, where it exists almost exclusively today. Broilo’s expression comes from vines in excess of 50 years of age farmed organically on alluvial soils. The grapes are macerated in open tank before native yeast fermentation is finished in neutral French barrique. The wine is bottled with minimal sulfurs after 24 months of elevage in neutral barrique with 10% new oak.
