Franzen

Mosel Terraces | Bremm

Angelina and Kilian Franzen’s story is every bit as moving as their wines. Today they have 5 hectares in the Calmont and additional holdings in the venerated Neefer Frauenberg and Kloster Stuben vineyards. Vines are up to 90 years old, their roots driven into the terraced slate, giving immense concentration to the wines. Fermentations are spontaneous, the wines go through malo, and GGs are bottled late. All this accounts for wines of that are as much about texture, herbaceousness, and salinity as they are fruit. They display remarkable freshness and animation as well as density and echoing length.

Franzen 2015 Frauenberg Riesling trocken

The Neefer Frauenberg sites directly in front of the Calmont and faces due south. The slate here was under sea-level and therefore the iron content in the soil never oxidized like it did in the Calmont. The GG version is from their oldest parcels and this is from younger vines, showing lilac, violet and black currant.
