Dr. Heger

Baden | Ihringen

Just a few miles from the French border, in Germany’s southernmost region of Baden, Joachim Heger farms the extraordinary grand crus of Ihringer Winklerberg and Achkarrer Schlossberg. On these steep, volcanic slopes, Joachim gives voice to unique, delicious, ageworthy expressions of pinot noir. For close to 40 vintages, his work has revolutionized the way we can interpret the potential of this ancient wine region. Joachim made a name for himself and Baden with pinot noir, but he also embraces classic Germanic varieties, foremost riesling and silvaner, by allowing each to work its magic on the unique volcanic, loess, and limestone soils.

Dr. Heger 2017 Ihringer Winklerberg Grauburgunder Erste Lage

If you’re synesthetic, you’ll see purple when you drink this wine. It’s redolent of violets and wisteria, rich honeydew melon and musk melon flavors. It’s completely dry, loaded with heady minerality and is utterly delicious. It is also from the pure volcanic, pre-1971 Vorderer Winklerberg site.
