Knebel

Mosel Terraces | Winningen

Matthias Knebel has become synonymous with the revolution in German wine quality. His fidelity to painstaking, handwrought viticulture in the unique landscape of the Mosel Terraces yields extraordinary results across his range, from a ridiculously undervalued village bottling to the magnificent GGs. The wines, from one of the most dynamic yet overlooked regions in Germany, deliver unadulterated intensity with an emphasis on texture, minerality, purity, and superb finesse.

Knebel 2016 Riesling

With Matthias’ entry into the VDP, he felt that 2016 had to be another step up in quality at the estate, and this basic riesling is no exception. It used to be sourced from the Terraces, but also parcels upstream in Leiwen. Not anymore. This, the “Von den Terrassen,” and the new “Alte Reben” wines were the revelations at this estate for me in 2016. It was fermented in 90% stainless, 10% neutral 500L cask. It's very expressive, with passionfruit, grapefruit and a slate-filled and salty finish. It overdelivers.
