Knebel

Mosel Terraces | Winningen

Matthias Knebel has become synonymous with the revolution in German wine quality. His fidelity to painstaking, handwrought viticulture in the unique landscape of the Mosel Terraces yields extraordinary results across his range, from a ridiculously undervalued village bottling to the magnificent GGs. The wines, from one of the most dynamic yet overlooked regions in Germany, deliver unadulterated intensity with an emphasis on texture, minerality, purity, and superb finesse.

Knebel 2018 Riesling "Alte Reben"

Because of the VDP strictures, Matthias had to figure out what to do with his Hamm and Brückstück sites, previously bottled separately, but not regarded as Grosse Lagen sites. His response was to bottle the oldest vineyards from both sites into this “Alte Reben” bottling and declassifying the rest into the “Von den Terrassen.” The vines are 60-70 years old, and it is one of my favorite wines from Matthias each vintage. 80% is fermented stainless, 20% in neutral 500L barrel.
