Knebel
Mosel Terraces | Winningen
Matthias Knebel has become synonymous with the revolution in German wine quality. His fidelity to painstaking, handwrought viticulture in the unique landscape of the Mosel Terraces yields extraordinary results across his range, from a ridiculously undervalued village bottling to the magnificent GGs. The wines, from one of the most dynamic yet overlooked regions in Germany, deliver unadulterated intensity with an emphasis on texture, minerality, purity, and superb finesse.
Knebel 2021 Röttgen Riesling Grosses Gewächs
Here is Matthias’ Grosses Gewächs from Röttgen, a Devonian slate site with loess and quartzite. It’s one of the steepest sites along the river, just downstream from the village. Here, to mitigate against climate change, Matthias has moved from pole trellising to horizontal wire trellises up the hill which allows for wind movement and for the lower rows to shade the grapes on the upper rows to prevent sun burnt grapes. Fermented and aged in 80% stainless steel and 20% neutral puncheon, it’s pure Mosel in its elegance and filigreed structure. This is not a rich GG, but a delicate and expressive one.
