Mosel Terraces | Winningen

Matthias Knebel has become synonymous with the revolution in German wine quality. His fidelity to painstaking, handwrought viticulture in the unique landscape of the Mosel Terraces yields extraordinary results across his range, from a ridiculously undervalued village bottling to the magnificent GGs. The wines, from one of the most dynamic yet overlooked regions in Germany, deliver unadulterated intensity with an emphasis on texture, minerality, purity, and superb finesse.

Knebel 2017 Uhlen Riesling Grosses Gewächs

Uhlen is the most famous of Knebel's vineyards and is undoubtedly one of the most impressive terraced vineyards in the world. Matthias has three parcels in the Uhlen, the “Blaufüsser Lay” (blue slate), “Laubach” (shell-bearing grey slate), and “Rothlay” (red slate with quartzite and sandstone), and it is fascinating to see this vineyard. The Uhlen GG is less overtly exotic than the Röttgen GG, and shows more density and depth. It’s not a heavy GG, but it does have more body than the Röttgen. Spontaneously fermented and aged in stainless steel.
