Knebel

Mosel Terraces | Winningen

Matthias Knebel has become synonymous with the revolution in German wine quality. His fidelity to painstaking, handwrought viticulture in the unique landscape of the Mosel Terraces yields extraordinary results across his range, from a ridiculously undervalued village bottling to the magnificent GGs. The wines, from one of the most dynamic yet overlooked regions in Germany, deliver unadulterated intensity with an emphasis on texture, minerality, purity, and superb finesse.

Knebel 2015 Uhlen Riesling

Uhlen is the most famous of Knebel's vineyards and is undoubtedly one of the most impressive terraced vineyards in the world. Matthias has three parcels in the Uhlen, the “Blaufüsser Lay” (blue slate), “Laubach” (shell-bearing grey slate), and “Rothlay” (red slate with quartzite and sandstone). In 2015, all three sites were blended together into one wine, because quantities were so small. In total, the 2015 vintage produced only 1000L from Uhlen (equal to 1 fuder). The parcels were all fermented separately in steel with spontaneous fermentations and they all stopped naturally. Once blended, the resulting wine is a wonder, showing pear, apricot and controne pepper supported by a salty-slatey juiciness with 10 grams residual sugar, which lengthens the palate and supports the body of the wine. In short, the wine is a tribute to the greatness of this terroir.
