Kollwentz

Leithaberg | Großhöflein

The Kollwenz family has been working the soils of the Burgenland for ten generations with precision farming and winemaking that has earned them the reputation as one of the region’s top producers. The family’s major focus is the Leithaberg, hilly mosaic of altitudes, expositions, and chalky soils that Andi Kollwentz says seems “predestined” for Chardonnay, whose existence in the region hardly trails Burgundy. Blaufränkisch too plays a role, as the family coaxes mineral, nuanced whites and reds from such ancient, articulate vineyards as Leithakalk, Katterstein, and Setz.

Kollwentz 2018 Blaufränkisch Ried Setz

The single vineyard “Krapflried”, in common parlance plainly called “Setz”, was first mentioned in documents in 1570. It borders the Großhöflein vineyard sites in the direction of Kleinhöflein. The southeast facing “Setz” enjoys plenty of sunshine from early morning till late in the afternoon. This allows the Blaufränkisch grapes to fully ripen in this wind-protected site. Younger vintages should be opened or decanted a few hours before drinking.
