Domaine René Lequin-Colin

Burgundy | Côte de Beaune | Santenay

The wines of this domaine emphasize purity and transparency. From 1er and grand cru holdings in Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet, vigneron François Lequin lets each site speak in the clearest possible voice through organic farming and “a small hand” in the cellar. There is a bright freshness to the wines, from the Retour aux Racines that is a complete departure from basic Bourgogne Blanc to the regal, but never overbearing Bâtard-Montrachet. The pinot noirs are charming and fruit-driven, marked by drinkability and finesse. Altogether, the Lequin-Colin range represents a rare opportunity to tap into tremendous quality and value in Burgundy.

Domaine René Lequin-Colin 2019 Santenay Les Charmes

Lieu-dit Les Charmes lies just below the 1er Cru Clos Rousseau, though its terroir imprint is markedly different. Les Charmes is characterized by well draining red soils, composed of red clay and rocky limestone, while the vineyard is traditionally considered a chardonnay terroir, this soil composition provides consistently marked levels of acidity in pinot noir, even in warmer vintages. This results in a bright, finessed expression that is counter to the Santenay stereotype of blockier structured wines. Lequin follows a similar cellar program for this wine as he does for other Santenay Rouge – fermenting with native yeasts in barrique, with 20% new oak, followed by 12 months of elevage in barrels and an additional 3 months in stainless prior to bottling.
