Mitja Sirk

Friuli-Venezia Giulia | Cormons

Mitja Sirk’s wine story opens with an extraordinary chapter. At age 11, with the encouragement of Josko Gravner, Mitja made his first wine. Over seven vintages, under the master’s eye, he refined his understanding of Friuli’s past and potential. With time and experience, he has narrowed his focus to one grape: friulano. He works with old vines, ponca soils, traditional trellising, and clean farming. In the cellar, he has moved away from extended skin contact, toward long lees aging and batonnage, for a style that is, in his words, “very clear and direct” and a voice that is distinctively his.

Mitja Sirk 2021 Bianco IGT

This wine is sourced from seven select vineyards in Collio and Colli Orientali grown at 70 to 150 meters above sea level. The vines are 20-70 years in age, grown orgaincally on the stony “ponca” soils of compacted sandstone and marl. The wine’s alcoholic fermentation and elevage occurs primarily in steel tanks, with 10% done in neutral barrel. The wine was aged approx 6 months with virtually no battonage in this vintage, due to the incredibly long, slow fermentation. The wine was bottled after a very light filtration with only minimal sulfur addition. What remains is the idea of a wine that is easily drinkable, while presenting a strong aromatic character combined with a sharp and clean ending.
