Domaine René Lequin-Colin

Burgundy | Côte de Beaune | Santenay

The wines of this domaine emphasize purity and transparency. From 1er and grand cru holdings in Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet, vigneron François Lequin lets each site speak in the clearest possible voice through organic farming and “a small hand” in the cellar. There is a bright freshness to the wines, from the Retour aux Racines that is a complete departure from basic Bourgogne Blanc to the regal, but never overbearing Bâtard-Montrachet. The pinot noirs are charming and fruit-driven, marked by drinkability and finesse. Altogether, the Lequin-Colin range represents a rare opportunity to tap into tremendous quality and value in Burgundy.

Domaine René Lequin-Colin 2016 Santenay "Sous la Roche"

“Sous la Roche” means “under the rock” and this lieu dit of Santenay is in eye-site of the tasting room of the domaine and immediately under the tree line of the vineyards, in the same line as the site Comme Dessus. Being so situated, it seems obvious that the site would be spare in topsoil and abundant in chalk, and so it is. There is more structure to this wine because of it and also a touch more reduction due to the active lime composition in the soil. 15% new oak was used in the fermentation. Chardonnay from Santenay is not a common wine in Burgundy, but it offers many of the characteristics of similar lieu dit wines from more recognizable villages: elegance, structure, length. These are not to be missed.
