Sohm & Kracher

Weinviertel | Illmitz

When long-time friends Aldo Sohm and Gerhard Kracher decided to make wine together, they brought to the project decades of collective experience and a shared love of great foods and wines of the world — especially dry grüner veltliner from their native Austria. They knew the focus would be grüner veltliner grown in the Weinviertel made according to two basic principles: the wines should be (low to) moderate in alcohol and should never be unctuous in character. Since their first vintage in 2009, they have kept a sharp focus on one variety — from the brisk, peppery “Lion” to the Chablis-like “St. Georg.”

Sohm & Kracher 2025 Grüner Veltliner “Lion”

The vineyards for "Lion" are an hour north of Vienna, in various south-/southeast-facing crus spread over five hectares in the Pulkautal and range from 10-25 years of age.

This wine is fermented spontaneously in stainless steel, where it also ages on its fine lees for another year. It is a crisp, fresh, aperitif-style grüner that is salty and easy to drink.
