Stagård

Kremstal | Stein

When Urban and Dominique Stagård took over the family estate in 2006, they set straight to reimagining its potential. Their vision had four elements: reclaiming obscure vineyards, reexamining the possibilities of iconic sites, farming based on a close study of soils, and making wine by drawing on knowledge and techniques of the past. Riesling, the variety the Stagårds say “speaks most to us,” is their clear focus though grüner veltliner finds a place in their work as well. Both varieties are grown organically (certified since 2009) on 17 hectares of exceptional sites scattered across the Kremstal and the Wachau.

Stagård 2017 Riesling "501"

501 represents the first 500 litre oak barrel used at the estate (up until the 2015 vintage, there was no use of oak in the cellar). The best grapes of all the Riesling vineyards are selected and handpicked to be spontaneously fermented in this 500L oak barrel. It remains on the lees until the following September to gain additional structure and depth. The 501 delivers exotic aromas and a salty minerality. It should be decanted!

Fermented spontaneously, with berries, in 500L oak after 48 hour maceration. Aged 11 months in 500L oak with ~10% berries.
