Trapl

Carnuntum | Stixneusiedl

In just over a decade, Johannes Trapl vaulted from being a youth with his family’s half hectare of vines to one of Austria’s most exciting winemakers. A passionate advocate for biodynamic farming and low-intervention winemaking, Trapl has brought new interest to Carnuntum, the sleepy red-wine region east of Vienna with an unglamorous reputation for its ponderous reds. In contrast, Trapl has become a pivotal figure in the revival of Blaufränkisch, a perfect vehicle for his fresher, mineral-driven style and transparent expression of the rugged limestone soils of the Spitzerberg, a hallowed but forgotten terroir.

Trapl 2021 Blaufränkisch "Karpatenschiefer"

Complex and multi-layered, this Blaufränkisch from old vines on limestone soils shows a grippy structure, depth and length while always remaining on the light-footed, drinkable spectrum. Fermented and aged in used oak barrels of 500 liters, unfined, unfiltered, will age gracefully.
