Vini Scirto

Etna

On the northern slopes of Sicily’s epic volcano Etna, Giuseppe Scirto and Valeria Franco tend 4 hectares of vines at 600-1,000 meters above sea level. Carricante, nerello mascalese, and nerello cappuccio planted between 1900 and 1930 in black volcanic sand and pumice soils work a slow magic. Working organically in the vineyards and with radical minimalism in the cellar, they bring forth wild and lively wines; guided by their own intuition, the teachings of Giuseppe’s grandfather, and a primal respect for their untamable terroir.

Vini Scirto 2019 "Don Pippinu" Nerello Mascalese IGT

Giuseppe’s grandfather Don Pippinu passed away in 2005, and much of what Giuseppe and Valeria do is in honor of his life’s work and is directly influenced by his past methods both in the vineyards and the cellar. The “Don Pippinu” rosso wine is an homage to his mentorship. The vineyard selected for the “Don Pippinu” rosso grows on very deep, pumice rich volcanic soils, less rocky than their other red wine vineyards. Vines here are 80 years old on average and include both nerello mascalese and nerello cappuccio. Grapes are crushed by foot, fermented by native yeasts and co-fermented with a composition of approximately 85% nerello mascalese and 15% nerello cappuccio each year. Macerations for the “Don Pippinu” average approximately 2 weeks, just about half as long as the maceration time for the “A’Culonna”. Elevage continues in stainless steel for approximately 12 months before bottling. No fining or filtration takes place for this wine, and no sulfur is added prior to bottling.
