Vino Gross

Štajerska Slovenija | Gorca | Podlehnik

Michael Gross is a young, fifth generation winemaker entrusted with opening a new chapter of his family’s story in Štajerska Slovenija (Styrian Slovenia). In 2004, luck brought the Gross family prime vineyards in Gorca and Colles, some 60 km (40 miles) south of their home in Ratsch, Austria. With climate, terrain, and varieties that are strikingly similar to southern Styria’s, it was natural for the family to put down roots here. Through farming organically, hand harvesting, working with spontaneous fermentations, malo, extended lees contact, and bottle aging, these wines are lively, engaging introductions to a region in thrilling revival.

Vino Gross 2020 Haloze Blanc

Haloze is a cuveè that blends the the dominant grape varieties in Michael’s vineyards of the Haloze Hills. The blend includes vines of furmint (40%), welschriesling (20%), and sauvignon blanc (40%), typical varieties of the region. Across the three varieties, vines span 10-65 years in age and grow on the calcareous clay-marl soils locally referred to as opok. Fermentation takes place in large neutral oak barrel, where the wine remains for 10-12 months before spending several additional months in stainless prior to bottling.
