Franzen 2017 Elbling
This is an ancient grape, thought to have been planted in the Mosel regions by the Romans. Elbling is an offspring of gouais blanc and is a cross between traminer and some unidentified variety, which is the same parentage as riesling. Elbling is typically more acidic and more tropical than riesling, but in Franzen’s hands, the wine is zippy yet round. We’ve wanted to bring this in for a few years and the 2017 is the best vintage so far, so now it is here.
